Postcode to Parliamentary Constituency Overview

Westminster parliamentary constituencies are the areas used to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons, which is the primary legislative chamber of the UK and is located in Westminster, London.

The Parliamentary Constituency code and name are matched to the Ward codes to provide the Constituency name for each Postcode in the UK. Due to up to 8% of Postcodes not having Ward codes yet, we have undertaken geographic proximity analysis to ensure every English and Welsh Postcode is allocated to an appropriate Parliamentary Constituency. Proximity analysis is based on the assumption that an unallocated Postcode falls within the same Parliamentary Constituency as its nearest neighbor and therefore the process cannot be guaranteed to provide exact results for this portion of the file.

Wards (electoral areas) are the key building blocks of government geography covering England and Wales. Wards are the units used to elect government councilors in metropolitan and non-metropolitan districts, unitary authorities and the London boroughs; not forgetting the unitary authorities throughout Wales. Electoral wards are found in most of England but in Wales and the Isle of Wight the equivalent areas are legally termed 'electoral divisions', although they are frequently also referred to as Wards. The only part of England and Wales without electoral wards is the Isles of Scilly, which has its own council but no electoral zoning. Electoral Wards / Divisions (and the Scilly Isles Parishes) cover the whole of England and Wales and all higher administrative units are necessarily built on these foundations.

Electoral Ward boundary changes are usually enacted on the first Thursday in May each year, to coincide with the local government elections. Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies are of course used to elect Members of Parliament to the House of Commons.

Currently there are 650 constituencies in England and Wales (2010 General Election).
